THE ANIMALS AT BLUE SKY ORGANIC FARMS

We May Have a Problem… But It’s the Best Kind.

At our farm, we have a deep, collective love for animals. From our pets at home to the animals we care for at the farm, every creature holds a special place in our hearts. Many of us have had the privilege of bottle-feeding baby goats, while others (including the youngest members of our crew) have played the role of doula during goat deliveries. And there are those among us who have even taken baby goats into our homes for weeks at a time, to provide the love the and attention some of them need overnight.

We are proud to have goats, pigs, donkeys, horses, chickens, ducks, a couple of bunnies and Gavin the goose. A couple of handfuls of them are rescues. A couple of handfuls of them are jerks.*

And we love them all with a strong commitment to their well-being. After all, they’re family.

*As one example, we have a tiny rooster named Kevin. Guess why.

“Why all the goats”, you ask?

We know, you want the goat milk.

We can’t sell goat milk.

BUT we can sell our goat milk caramels.

And yes, they’re absolutely amazing. No, they don’t taste “goaty”—unless by "goaty" you mean chewy, gooey, caramel perfection in every bite.

Ok, clearly we didn’t get goats TO make goat milk caramels. Read on, friends…

We know you want
all the details

Let’s start with the basics HERE:

CHICKENS

We raise chickens for eggs, and while we always have a couple of hundred at any given time, you might wonder why we don’t always have “enough" eggs. The answer? Two words: retirees and roosters. Our older hens get to retire here, living out their days in peace. It’s not the most cost-effective way to farm, but it’s how we do chickens.  Our girls lay Certified Organic, pasture-raised eggs and are fed corn-free, soy-free organic feed whenever available. On rare occasions, when our supplier runs out, we use regular organic feed. Luckily, that’s happened only a couple of times in 15 years.

DUCKS

We’ve had an on-and-off again relationship with ducks, but right now it’s definitely on-because duck eggs are delicious (so we’re excited)! Our new friends have a new cute mini-lake in the back pasture, which the pigs are also huge fans of.

GAVIN THE GOOSE

He’s very handsome and has frilly feathers, however he’s usually kind of dirty because he thinks he’s a goat. One of our rescue success stories for sure.

THE PIGS

It’s almost like the first two pigs showed up secretly one day a few years ago. Lucy and Ethel were our first two rescue pigs. Then a few months ago we got a few more rescues from our friends at Heartquist Hollow Farm The new friends are so friendly AND….we found out one is pregnant. You guys….we’re gonna have baby pigs!

THE GOATS

It all started with just four. Sara, our general manager and a true dog lover, found herself caring for stray dogs in desperate need of nutrition. Goat milk seemed like the answer—and so, she bought four goats. The dogs thrived, and Sara found that the goat milk was also a lifesaver when she needed a break from nursing her own human kids.

What was meant to be a simple solution quickly turned into a whole herd, one or four goats at a time. A few years ago, we had big plans to start Arizona's first raw goat milk co-op, but after learning that upgrading our facilities would cost over $300,000, we decided to focus on what we do best: making delicious goat milk caramels, the occasional bread pudding with caramel sauce, and each year we find loving homes for many of the sweet new baby goats.

Our goats are more than just milkers—they’re family. We raise dairy goats and sell them as milking goats, pets, and companions for other livestock. From saving stray dogs to making treats and raising happy goats, it’s been an unexpected journey we wouldn’t change for the world.

THE DONKEYS AND HORSES

We have donkeys because—well, how could we not? Every donkey that’s passed through these gates has been a rescue, and let’s just say, the vet and supplement bills are... extensive. But look at them! They bring so much joy to the farm, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

At first, we were happy with our donkeys. But how could a bunch of farm girls grow up here without learning to ride horses? Obviously, we needed one.

A few years ago, we adopted an older horse from one of our favorite coworkers. Then, during the pandemic, another one of our amazing coworkers found a poor, one-eyed horse, all alone and dehydrated, not too far from the farm. She brought him home, and we did our best to find his owners—but no luck.

So, Jack became part of the family. We took care of his eye and everything else he needed, worked on building his trust, and over time, he’s turned into one of the friendliest animals on the farm.

By the way, of course we had to get a third horse so the farm girls could ride together at the same time!

We love animals and are so fortunate to have many rescues who deserve the best care, including supplements and veterinary visits.

If you're able to, we would be incredibly grateful for any gift to help support the care of our ever-growing family of animals. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference and helps us continue providing the love and care they deserve.

Thank you so much for your kindness!

Please note, we are not a nonprofit farm, so donations are considered gifts and are not tax-deductible
