You might think we magically appear at our weekly farmer’s markets, ready to go with an easy smile. Although we may have easy smiles, there’s nothing easy about getting ready for Saturday morning. Here’s the run down.
7 AM: Produce is harvested at Blue Sky Organic Farms.
1 PM: Freshly harvested produce is washed and packaged for the market.
4:30 AM (Yes, AM): Employees arrive at Blue Sky Organic Farms. We load up the produce, tables, and tents and hit the road.
6 AM: Arrive at our destinations and unload to be ready by 8 AM.
8 AM to 1 PM: CHAOS!!!!! Blue Sky employees and helpful volunteers operate two cash registers. We check out produce and restock produce, while answering cooking and taste questions. During a free moment, we mist the produce with water to keep it properly hydrated. We balance all that and promote the farm. Somewhere in there, you have to find time to actually use the bathroom.
1 PM: Pack up! Move leftover produce, tables, and tents back to the truck and head home to Blue Sky. Some of the leftovers are given to our chickens, and the rest is donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank.
3 PM: Relax. … HA! Kidding! You didn’t believe that, did you? Once the market business is done, it’s back to the usual business of farming until we’re just too tired to stand.
Now that you understand what goes into a farmer’s market, you might wonder where you can see us (and our produce) in action. We currently appear at two markets in the area, on Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM:
Old Town Farmers Market in Scottsdale
Brown Avenue and 1st Street in Old Town Scottsdale
Roadrunner at Roadrunner Park
Off the 51 and Cactus
Please come by and see us one Saturday morning. Discover all Blue Sky has to offer, as well as the other wonderful vendors who take part in this friendly, local event every week!
